Snowflake Monday

I just finished updating my snowflake pattern directory again, and it feels SO grand!!! I think it took about eight hours this time. I'd let it slip away for more than a year, so at least 48 patterns needed to be alphabetized, formatted and added. (I skipped about six different weeks of publishing patterns when things here just were not compatible with the process of designing, writing, stiffening, photographing and formatting.)

Once again, I'm going to try to stay caught up. But mostly, I'm going to try to enjoy every minute with my husband I can.

It's gardening season at last! I have a million rocks to re-cover. I know, there really aren't 1,000,000, but it feels like it.

One of the benefits of this week's project is I actually finished power washing my patio and got the porch garden in more respectable condition. I just couldn't handle all those rocks being all over the porch anymore!










Because I'm hoping for no more snow until October (because I planted things that should have waited until after Mother's Day because of the chance of overnight freeze), I didn't make a traditional white snowflake with this week's pattern. Which means it doesn't need to be stiffened! I made a Mother's Day gift using recycled CDs one of my co-workers gave me with a challenge to see what kind of craft I could come up with to use them.

Lizard came up with today's pattern name by using words that started with C and D because I used CDs. Pretty cool, given he is struggling with the advanced symptoms of Parkinson's, huh?

And garden rocks. I made a few new rock coverings. I used store-bought colored thread to add color to my pre-blooming garden and because I've been enjoying watching the colors from last year fade through endless sunlight exposure but still appear somewhat dark in the rain.






One of my new rock coverings isn't on an old rock from my garden. I found it recently during a walk with Lizard, and it just screamed out to join my collection.

Finished Size: 5 inches from point to point
Materials: Size 10 crochet thread, size 7 crochet hook, optional 6 (or 12) beads, one or two CDs to be recycled or a rock for the garden, glue if using 2 CDs

SPECIAL STITCHES:

Popcorn Stitch (pc)

Work 5 dc in designated st, take loop off hook, insert hook through top loop of 1st dc and replace loop on hook, pull loop through top of 1st dc.

Crystal Dream Snowflake Instructions (for ornament, make 2)

If using beads, string six beads onto thread. Make magic ring.

Round 1: [Pc in ring, ch 3] 6 times, omitting last 2 ch of final repeat; 1 dc in top of starting pc to form 6th ch 3 sp of Round. Pull magic circle tight.

Round 2: [Ch 3, 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook (dc picot made), ch 5, 1 dc in 5th ch from hook, ch 3, 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook (dc picot made), sl st in next ch 3 sp] 6 times.


Round 3: [Ch 3, sl st around top of next dc picot, in next ch 5 tip work (1 sc, 1 hdc, 3 dc, ch 2, draw up bead, catching bead ch 1, ch 2 (or ch 5 total for the tip if not using beads), 3 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, sl st around top of next dc picot, ch 3, sl st in next sl st] 6 times.

Round 4: Ch 8 (counts as 1 trtr and ch 3), [in next ch 5 tip work (5 dc (on right side of bead if using beads), ch 7, 5 dc (on left side of bead if using beads)), ch 3, 1 trtr in next sl st between spokes, ch 3] 6 times, omitting last ch 3 and last trtr of final repeat; sl st in 5th ch of starting ch 8.

Round 5: [Ch 3, in next ch 7 tip work (2 dtr, 2 tr, 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dtr), ch 3, sl st in top of next trtr] 6 times; bind off for snowflake. Weave in ends.












Finish: If using two CDs, glue them right sides together with the shiny, reflective sides facing out. Allow to dry.

On second snowflake, instead of ch 3 tips, 1 sc in ch 1 tip of first snowflake to join flakes back to back, insides together, right sides out, and insert CD(s) prior to 6th join.

For snowflake rock, do not bind off at end of Round 5. Instead, work mesh stitch of ch 5 or ch 7, depending upon personal preference, and sc or dc, depending upon personal preference, evenly spaced around five or six times or amount of Rounds required to enclose rock. On final Round, 1 dc in each ch 5 or ch 7 sp to close opening, then bind off leaving a long tail, and weave tail in and out of each dc; pull tight without breaking, bind off again and weave in ends.
