I looked in the garden and what did I see? Forget-me-nots peeking back at me!

Finished Size: flower 2 inches across; snowflake 6 inches across from point to point
Materials: Size 10 crochet thread in three colors, size 7 crochet hook, empty pizza box, wax paper or plastic wrap, cellophane tape, water soluble school glue or desired stiffener, water, glitter, small container for glue/water mixture, paintbrush, stick pins that won't be used later for sewing, clear thread or fishing line

With yellow or flower center color, make magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 4 dc in ring, pull hook out of loop (dropped loop) and insert in 2nd ch of starting ch 2, insert in dropped loop, pull dropped loop through 2nd ch of starting ch 2 (starting popcorn stitch made), * ch 3, 5 dc in ring, pull hook out of loop (dropped loop) and insert in top loop of 1st dc of this 5/dc group, insert in dropped loop, pull dropped loop through top loop of 1st dc (popcorn stitch made); repeat from * around 4 times, ch 3, sl st in top of starting popcorn; bind off. Pull magic circle as tight as you can get it with all those stitches in the center. The object here is to make the flower center poufy and 3D.

Round 2: With white or flower contrast color, * 1 sc in any ch 3 sp (or next ch 3 sp on repeats), ch 4, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch (picot point made), 1 sc in same ch 3 sp; repeat from * around 5 times; sl st in starting sc; bind off.

Round 3: With blue or petal color, * 1 sc in top of any picot point (or next picot point on repeats), sk next 2 sc, 2 dc in next sc (or in between the 2 sc in main body of flower), 1 tr in same st, 2 dc in same st; repeat from * around 5 times; sl st in starting sc.

Round 4: * 1 sc in next dc, 2 hdc in next dc, 3 dc in next tr, 2 hdc in next dc, 1 sc in next dc, sk next sc; repeat from * around 5 times; sl st in starting sc; bind off. Weave in ends.

Round 5: White white, * 1 sc in middle dc of any petal (or same dc on repeats), 1 sc in next dc, ch 3, 1 dc in gap between next 2 sc (or in 2nd sc), ch 3, sl st in top of dc just made (picot made), ch 3, 1 sc in next dc, 1 sc in next dc, ch 5; repeat from * around 5 times, omitting last ch 5 of final repeat; ch 2, 1 tr in starting sc to form 6th ch 5 loop of Round.

Round 6: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc over post of tr directly below, * ch 10, 2 dc in next ch 6 loop, ch 12, 1 dc in 9th ch from hook, ch 2, sk 2 ch, 1 tr in next ch, 2 dc in same ch 6 loop; repeat from * around 5 times, omitting last 2 dc of final repeat; sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 2; bind off.

Round 7: With white, 6 sc in top of any ch 8 loop tip, * 1 sc in next ch 2 sp, 1 hdc in same sp, 1 dc in same sp, ch 10, sk next ch 10 and next 2 dc, 1 dc in next ch 2 sp, 1 hdc in same sp, 1 sc in same sp, 12 sc in next ch 8 loop tip; repeat from * around 5 times, omitting last 6 sc of final repeat; sl st in starting sc.

Round 8: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and ch 3), [1 dc in next sc, ch 3] 2 times, * 1 dc in next sc, ch 6, 1 sc over both ch 10 of previous 2 Rounds, ch 6, 1 dc in 3rd sc of next 12/sc tip, [ch 3, 1 dc in next sc] 3 times, ch 5, [1 dc in next sc, ch 3] 3 times; repeat from * around 5 times, omitting last 3 dc/ch 3 sequences of final repeat; sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 5; bind off. Weave in ends.

Finish: Tape wax paper or plastic wrap to top of empty pizza box. Pin snowflake to box on top of wax paper or plastic wrap.

If using glue, mix a few drops of water with a teaspoon of glue in small washable container. Paint snowflake with glue mixture or desired stiffener. Sprinkle lightly with glitter. Wash paintbrush and container thoroughly. Allow snowflake to dry at least 24 hours. Remove pins. Gently peel snowflake from wax paper or plastic wrap. Attach 10-inch clear thread to one spoke, weaving in end. Wrap fishing line around tree branch (or tape to ceiling or any overhead surface) and watch the snowflake twirl freely whenever you walk by! Snowflake also may be taped to window or tied to doorknob or cabinet handle.

  4. The crocheter in me is loving the snowflake - especially the center!

    The wildflower-observer is noting the fuzzy leaves on the real forget-me-nots and trying to file it away for future mental reference. :)
