Why would I dream of starting yet another quilt when I have so many WIPs???
Well, because I got this snazzy Christmas present, and the February 15 project really caught my eye! I have boxes of scraps to use up, and this seemed like a perfect way to eat up some of those little leftovers.
Although I was very drawn to this project, I didn't like the idea of repeating one block, and three of the blocks in this "Heavenly Stars Quilt" are not stars. So some days, I did my own thing, and in the end, I'm very happy I did. I think my block variety and a true star theme makes this quilt that much better.
Halfway done, and looking good so far!
Now it was time to deviate. I decided to stick with the nine-patch formula and do some nine-patch stars that were not included in this Block a Day calendar.
Yay! Now I can follow the pattern again, and hopefully get this baby done!
Next, I just had to come up with my own layout, and after playing around with the blocks on my dining room floor, I settled on a diagonal color stripe theme.
The flimsy was done but measured a mere 35 inches by 45 inches. I decided once again to do my own thing. The nine-patch stars were kind of fun, and I always need to work on my template drafting and precision piecing skills, so four more blocks were in order. Now this quilt top fits a double bed! If I ever piece another quilt top like this again, I may have to use the sashing fabric for the block backgrounds. I really like how the four extra blocks turned out!

That sure is a neat way and a good way to challenge yourself as well each day.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Pat! Some of those tiny triangles were indeed a challenge, but they were fun, too, and I would do them again.
DeleteThis looks awesome! I have the same calendar and LOVE those blocks and little quilt!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Alison! I didn't plan to do another full quilt from this calendar this year, but then I saw today's... :)
DeleteIt is a perfect way to use up your scraps. You will have a beautiful quilt when you are done. Great job, I love the blocks.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Curly! I think I've become temporarily addicted to nine-patch blocks!
DeleteOh Deb, this is gorgeous! I really like the thoughtful motif placement in the block centers. Number 9 is a real knockout.
ReplyDeleteMakes me want to dig through my stash and put a fresh blade on the rotary cutter.... So many ideas, so little time. :)
