Dusty words lying under carpets,
seldom heard, well must you keep your secrets
locked inside, hidden deep from view?
You can talk to me... (Stevie Nicks)

Winding down for the season or the heat leaving the flowers in defeat?
ReplyDeleteWind destroyed this one in just a few hours, Pat. Not sure if pollinators even had a chance to do their stuff. I hope so, because this one was a beauty!
DeleteIf the progression is as shown, then yes the pollinators did their job. If not, then not..... =>/<=
ReplyDeleteYou've given me hope, Susan! I plan to scatter the seeds and hope they will produce a bunch of these fuzzy poppies!
DeleteRather than scattering the seeds, plant each seed head separately, then in the Spring dig up the clump & divide & replant smaller clumps. = a better chance for seed heads to reproduce. =>/<=
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a new one on me, Susan. I've been putting the seed heads in the freezer over the winter, then crunching and sprinkling them on top of the soil in about April between snows. I thought poppy seeds need sun to germinate. But I'm certainly willing to try your method.
DeleteOr you can try:
ReplyDeleteMix up 2 prts moist, not soggy medium [perlite or sand] to 1 prt seed in a seal-able plastic bag.
Store in FRIG for 2 wks, remove & store in a cool, dark place for 1 wk. Repeat cycle until ground reads 55-60 degrees.
Scatter stratified seed on moist soil in early spring. Should germinate w/in 2 - 3 wks when ground is 55- 60 degrees.
Keep in mind that the ground is always 10-15 degrees COLDER than the air. =>/<=
Thank you, Susan! I feel like I'm back in college, learning GREAT gardening tips!!!
