We endured six weeks of medical issues, which kept me away from my crochet hook, my sewing machine and even my garden, but now I'm back, and hopefully able to keep up with weekly patterns once again. Fingers crossed…
While getting reacquainted with the now-hidden treasures in my overgrown flower garden, I noticed my neon garden rocks from back in May have faded quite a bit. I knew this would happen, but I guess I didn't expect it to happen quite so lightning fast!
So, time to make a new rock to shoot side by side with a faded rock to show the amazing difference, two months apart. I thought it would be fun to do a new mandala because it's been a while since I've made one, plus, it will grant my plants a bit more water protection because it can hold more moisture.

Finished Size: 6 inches from point to point
Materials: Size 10 crochet thread in two colors, size 7 crochet hook, optional smooth river rock approximately 5.5 inches round and 2 inches thick, empty pizza box, wax paper or plastic wrap, cellophane tape, water soluble school glue or desired stiffener, water, glitter, small container for glue/water mixture, paintbrush, stick pins that won't be used later for sewing, clear thread or fishing line
Snowflake Mandala Instructions
With base color, make magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 1 trtr in ring, [1 dc in ring, 1 trtr in ring] 5 times; sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 2. Pull magic circle tight.
Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in same ch as sl st, [1 dc in next trtr, 3 dc in next dc] 5 times; 1 dc in next trtr, 1 dc in same ch as starting dc; sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 2.
Round 3: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc, 2 dc in same ch as sl st, [1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 5 dc in next dc] 5 times; 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc in same ch as starting dc; sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 2.

Round 9: Ch 7 (counts as 1 dc and ch 5), [sk next 3 dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 5] 32 times for Snowflake; sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 7; bind off. Weave in ends; OR for Rock, 31 times; sk next 3 dc, ch 2, 1 tr in 2nd ch of starting ch 7 to form 33rd ch 5 sp of Round.
Rounds 10-13 for Rock (or number of Rounds required to cover Rock): Ch 7 (counts as 1 dc and ch 5), [1 dc in next ch 5 sp, ch 5] 31 times; ch 2, 1 tr in 2nd ch of 2nd ch of starting ch 7 to form 33rd ch 5 sp of Round. Insert rock from time to time to check fit. Add or subtract Rounds as needed to comfortably fit rock.
Round 14: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each ch 5 sp around, inserting rock at approximately the halfway point of final Round and taking care not to scrape hook against rock as Round is completed; sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 2; bind off leaving a long tail. Weave tail through top of each Round 9 dc and pull tight. Bind off again. Weave tail through tightened stitches one more time and pull tight; bind off again. Weave in end.
Snowflake Instructions
Round 1: Using flake color, [1 trtr around post of any (or next in repeats) Round 1 trtr, ch3, 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc around post of 8th dc of next Round 7 15/dc group, ch 3, 1 dc around same post, ch 5, 1 dc around same post BETWEEN previous 2 dc, ch 3, 1 dc around same post BELOW all 3 previous dc, ch 3, 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook] 6 times; sl st in starting trtr; bind off. Weave in ends

Snowflake Mandala Finish: Tape wax paper or plastic wrap to top of empty pizza box. Pin snowflake to box on top of wax paper or plastic wrap.
If using glue, mix a few drops of water with a teaspoon of glue in small washable container. Paint snowflake with glue mixture or desired stiffener. Sprinkle lightly with glitter. Wash paintbrush and container thoroughly. Allow snowflake to dry at least 24 hours. Remove pins. Gently peel snowflake from wax paper or plastic wrap. Attach 10-inch clear thread to one spoke, weaving in end. Wrap fishing line around tree branch (or tape to ceiling or any overhead surface) and watch snowflake twirl freely whenever you walk by! Snowflake also may be taped to window or tied to doorknob or cabinet handle.
That is so creative! And wow, what a contrast in color between the new and old. I like the faded one though - it looks very soft and weathered and natural.
