Snowflake Monday

Deck the flake with crocheted "twinkling" lights!

Today's snowflake originally was conceived on 11 December 2013. Now that the pattern finally is finished, I can't believe this little gem took a full decade to come out of hiding!

You may do whatever you'd like with snowflakes you make from this pattern, but you may not sell or republish the pattern. Thanks, and enjoy!

Finished Size: 4.5 inches from point to point
Materials: Size 10 crochet thread in three or more colors, size 7 crochet hook, tiny amount of optional stuffing, empty pizza box, wax paper or plastic wrap, cellophane tape, water soluble school glue or desired stiffener, water, glitter, small container for glue/water mixture, paintbrush, stick pins that won't be used later for sewing, clear thread or fishing line

NOTE: Bulbs may be made in multiple colors instead of one color

.

Thread Lights Instructions

Bulbs (make 6 in Christmas light color/colors) (But wouldn't about 30 more bulbs make an adorable Christmas necklace?!? I will definitely try to set aside some time to do that!)

Make magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in ring; do not join on this Round or any of the following Bulb Rounds.

Round 2: [2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 2 sc] 2 times for a total of 8 sc.

Round 3: 1 sc in each sc around.

Round 4: [2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc] 2 times for a total of 10 sc.

Round 5: 1 sc in each sc around.

Round 6: [2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 4 sc] 2 times for a total of 12 sc.

Round 7: 1 sc in each sc around.

Round 8: 1 dec sc across next 2 sc all the way around for a total of 6 sc; stuff lightly if desired. Bind off with long tail; weave ending tail through each Round 8 sc and pull tight. Tie a knot with beginning and ending tails and then pull both ends back into bulb.

Light String Finish: With green or light "wire" color thread, ch 20 (or desired length between bulbs, using the same number of chains between each bulb), 4 sc in a circle in bottom of 1st bulb, sl st in 1st sc, [ch 20, 4 sc in a circle in bottom of next bulb, sl st in 1st sc] 5 times; ch 20, bind off.

Let There Be Light Snowflake

With white (or snowflake color), make magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in ring, [ch 15, 1 sc in 14th ch from hook, ch 1, 2 dc in ring] 6 times, omitting last 2 dc of final repeat; sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 2. Don't pull magic circle too tight.

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 tr), [in next ch 14 tip work (3 sc, ch 5, 3 hdc, ch 5, [[3 dc, ch 5]] 2 times, 3 hdc, ch 5, 3 sc), 1 tr between next 2 dc] 6 times, omitting last tr of final repeat; sl st in 3rd ch of starting ch 3.

Round 3: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), [3 sc in next ch 5 loop, ch 3, 3 hdc in next ch 5 loop, ch 3, in next ch 5 loop work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc), ch 3, 3 hdc in next ch 5 loop, ch 3, 3 sc in next ch 5 loop, 1 fpdc around next tr] 6 times, omitting last fpdc of final repeat; sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 2; bind off. Weave in ends.

Finish: I've been stiffening my flakes with undiluted, full-strength water soluble school glue for quite a while now, and I've been squishing the glue onto and throughout each flake with my fingers (yucky mess!!!) instead of gingerly painting the flakes with glue. Yes, it's a mess. But it's faster. And stiffer.

Tape wax paper or plastic wrap to top of empty pizza box. Pin snowflake to box on top of wax paper or plastic wrap.

If using glue, mix a few drops of water with a teaspoon of glue in small washable container. Paint snowflake with glue mixture or desired stiffener. Sprinkle lightly with glitter. Wash paintbrush and container thoroughly. Allow snowflake to dry at least 24 hours. Remove pins. Gently peel snowflake from wax paper or plastic wrap. Gently string lights through flake openings as desired.

Attach 10-inch clear thread to one spoke, weaving in end. Wrap fishing line around tree branch (or tape to ceiling or any overhead surface) and watch snowflake twirl freely whenever you walk by! Snowflake also may be taped to window or tied to doorknob or cabinet handle.

  1. What a fun idea. I can picture this with tiny LED lights too, either inside the crochet lights or by themselves on the snowflake.
