Garden Roundup

Hard to believe summer is almost over. Seems it went way too fast this year. But I am so thankful to get rid of the excessive heat.

The Rose of Sharon hibiscus bush that came with the house is once again the only hibiscus in on our property that survived winter. I've purchased gorgeous giant red hibiscus plants almost every year for the past five or six years, minus 2020, of course. The last four I bought came with asurance they could survive our winters. Each was purchased at a different venue because the previous venue's plant did not survive. I was tempted to buy another hibiscus plant in July when they went on sale. I opted not to, even though I love the flowers, because it's too much of a disappointment when they don't survive our winter.

And oh, that darned bunny!!!

I rescued a couple of gazanias and blanket flowers from the local garden center clearance rack and have been working diligently to resurrect them. They finally begin blooming, and my unwelcome hopping visitors demolish them!

I re-rescued three severed blossoms. (The bunny did not leave any gazania flower remnants.)

I did get to see one gazania before it became a meal.

My Siberian irises made many seeds this year, and I spread the seeds everywhere I want them to grow, forgetting to take pictures first.

Irises seem to take a very long time to grow from seed, but they do grow. I recently found two bearded iris seed heads, and I plan to plant them where I have to thin out irises that have grown too thick and no longer bloom.

I've had a few super radiant bi-color sunflowers this year, and those and the red/chocolate sunflowers are the only sunflower seed heads I'm saving. I'm sharing the wealth of wild yellow sunflower seeds in weed patches around the community where I'd like to see wild sunflowers growing instead. They probably will get mowed, but between now and then, perhaps some birds will be well fed, and perhaps some of those seeds will be deposited and fertilized in perfect places...

  1. Lovely hibiscus photos! I didn't know iris ever grew from seed.

At least Mr. Hungry Bunny left you enough for a mini bouquet....
